Engine Variants

B200F (2.0L inline-4): Non-turbo four-cylinder found in some 940 models. Basic, reliable workhorse with modest output.

B230F (2.3L inline-4): The bread-and-butter naturally aspirated “Redblock” four. Bulletproof, simple, adequate power for daily driving. Standard in most non-turbo 940s.

B230FK (2.3L turbo inline-4): Low-pressure turbocharged variant. Multiple forum contributors report these are good for 300+ bhp reliably with stock internals when properly maintained. The connecting rods are the weak link, most agree 300 bhp is safe territory. Stock pistons handle up to approximately 390 bhp.

940 Turbo variants: UK-market 940 Sports Edition offered 190 hp (manual) or 165 hp (automatic) turbocharged outputs.

B6304F (3.0L inline-6 “Whiteblock”): Smooth, all-aluminium double overhead cam six fitted to the 960. Part of Volvo’s Modular Engine family. Less common in North America. Workshop manuals for these are harder to find, and forum users warn of scams when sourcing them.

All Redblock engines use an intermediate shaft-driven distributor (like the 240 series), not cam-driven, this is factory correct, not a swap.

Transmission Options

Manual: 5-speed manual gearbox, available on turbo models. Generally preferred by enthusiasts, “Honestly, don’t bother with the auto” if you want any fun.

Automatic: 4-speed automatic (AW30-40 family). Known for occasional issues with shift solenoids and the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch. Per the factory workshop manual, the AW30 won’t shift out of first gear if the speedometer sender fails. Multiple forum contributors report cleaning the PNP switch often fixes flashing overdrive arrow codes. Solenoid B is internal to the valve body, not a roadside repair.

Notable Features

Safety:

  • Standard driver’s airbag
  • Side Impact Protection System (SIPS)
  • Three-point seatbelts for all occupants
  • Integrated child booster seat (some models)
  • ABS (anti-lock brakes)
  • Reinforced safety cage

Suspension:

  • Front: MacPherson struts
  • Rear: Live axle with coil springs and Panhard rod (not independent like the later 850/V70)
  • Bilstein struts and IPD poly bushings are common upgrades

Brakes:

  • Ventilated front discs, solid rear discs
  • ABS standard

Interior:

  • Leather upholstery on higher trims (wool on base models)
  • Power windows, mirrors, heated seats (upper specs)
  • Ergonomic dash layout with five analog gauges

Cargo:

  • Wagon: 992 litres seats up, 2121 litres seats folded

R134a air conditioning: First-year R134 for Volvo was 1993. Systems are known to develop leaks at the condenser and pressostats after 20+ years. Green oily fluid indicates PAG oil from the compressor, not coolant.

Common weak points:

  • Expansion tank caps and tanks themselves (oil residue in coolant often indicates head gasket trouble)
  • Wiring harness over the engine (known to crack and crumble on high-mileage examples)
  • Throttle body (common failure, clean or replace)
  • Rear main seal, camshaft cover seals
  • Tailgate struts (wagons)
  • Windscreen trim peeling and rusting underneath
  • Power steering racks can develop leaks (rack replacement or stop-leak use reported)

This is not a fancy car. It’s a solid, rear-drive Swedish brick that responds well to basic maintenance and doesn’t tolerate shortcuts. If you find one that’s been properly looked after, it’ll outlast your patience.
