Engine Variants
P2 Generation (2001-2009): The naturally aspirated 2.4L inline-five produced around 140 hp and was the base engine. The 2.5L T5 turbocharged inline-five was the performance option, making roughly 240 hp and 320 Nm. These red-block-derived engines are known for durability, expect 250,000+ miles if maintained. Oil weeping from the front cover is common but not terminal. Early turbos ran low boost (around 5 psi) and are generally reliable; watch for grey smoke on acceleration indicating turbo wear. Intercooled T5 variants appeared later in the P2 run.
P3 Generation (2010-2018): Volvo moved to a 2.0L turbocharged inline-four (T5) making around 240-250 hp. Some models experienced oil consumption issues due to piston rings; 2019+ models received updated rings. The T6 added a supercharger on top of the turbo for roughly 300+ hp.
SPA Generation (2019-present): The 2.0L four-cylinder continues in T5 (turbo) and T6 (turbo + supercharger) forms. Output hovers around 250 hp for the T5 and 316 hp for the T6. A master Volvo technician recommends 2019-2022 SPA T5 or T6 models with updated piston rings. The newer B5/B6 mild-hybrid engines have yet to prove long-term durability.
Transmission Options
Manual: 5-speed manual with Laycock overdrive (P2) or 5-speed without overdrive. The five-speed manuals are regarded as the most durable option. Overdrive units can suffer electrical or hydraulic issues causing intermittent engagement.
Automatic: 4-speed auto (early P2), 6-speed Aisin auto (later P2/P3), 8-speed Aisin auto (SPA). The autos are generally robust but can sap power and feel slower. Change the transmission fluid every 5 years or 50,000 miles despite Volvo calling it “lifetime”, ignoring this shortens transmission life. There is no serviceable filter. Use a dealer or experienced independent who knows the correct procedure; setting the level incorrectly will destroy the gearbox.
Notable Features
- Safety leadership: The US government called the S60 (and related models) among the safest cars in the world during the 2000s.
- High mileage capability: Volvos regularly exceed 250,000 miles with proper maintenance. One 2009 S60 reached 360,000 miles before the owner finally retired it.
- Polestar performance upgrades: Available from 2006+ models, Polestar tunes add roughly 28-30 hp and similar torque gains for $800-$1,500. Transmission calibration is also improved.
- Red block durability (P2): The 2.4L and 2.5L engines are understressed and overbuilt. Front crank seal weeps are easy to fix during timing belt service.
- Independent rear suspension (P2/P3): Live axle with coils, trailing arms, and Panhard rod in the rear; independent front. Bushings wear gradually without dramatic driving changes, check leading bushings in the trailing arms closely.
- Dana 30 rear axle (P2/AWD): Essentially unkillable, though ring and pinion can get noisy with age.
- Parts interchangeability (P2): High cross-compatibility across the P2 platform (S60, V70, XC70, S80, XC90) makes sourcing parts easier.
