Why Obscure Japanese Cars and Mates Beat Any Supercar Event
A tight-knit group of classic Isuzu owners travel thousands of miles each year to tackle Tennessee's legendary Snake road. But as one participant explains, it's the friendships — not the 489 corners — that keep them coming back.
The roads are legendary, but the people are better
According to Hagerty, a dedicated crew of enthusiasts have made it an annual tradition to road-trip across America in their 35-year-old Japanese cars — specifically obscure Isuzus — to tackle The Snake in Tennessee. Officially known as Route 421, this road makes the famous Tail of the Dragon look tame with its staggering 489 curves across 33 miles.
But here's the thing: the road is almost beside the point.
What really drives dozens of owners to risk mechanical heartbreak in decades-old machinery for what's essentially a weekend lawn party? The people, pure and simple.
More campfire than car show
As reported by Hagerty, the event is deliberately low-key. There's no judging, no trophies, no corporate sponsors flogging energy drinks. Instead, it's 48 hours of mates hanging about, wrenching on cars, eating BBQ, and sitting around a fire pit. There's live music too — and refreshingly, it's not the same old '50s rock'n'roll that dominates most boomer car events.
The cars serve as a common interest and a conversation starter, but they bring together a genuinely diverse group who've formed proper friendships through shared experiences on the road.
The obscure car advantage
There's something special about building a community around unloved, overlooked machinery. No one's showing up in a Isuzu trying to flex — they're there because they genuinely love the cars and the people who "get it."
These annual pilgrimages aren't about the destination or even the legendary driving roads. They're about the bonds formed when you're elbow-deep in a 35-year-old Japanese car at 2am, helping a mate get back on the road. That's what keeps them coming back, year after year.
