Porsche 356 Concours Takes Over Albert Park

Over forty Porsche 356s lined the lakeside at Albert Park last weekend for what's become Melbourne's premier air-cooled gathering.

A Sea of Curves

Melbourne's Albert Park played host to the Australian Porsche 356 Register's annual concours last Sunday, and the turnout was nothing short of spectacular. Forty-three cars made the journey — a new record for the event, which has been running since 2018.

The lakeside setting provided the perfect backdrop for what is arguably the most beautiful shape Porsche ever penned. Speedsters, coupes, and cabriolets spanning 1950 to 1965 were arranged along the waterfront, drawing crowds of enthusiasts and curious passers-by alike.

Best in Show

The People's Choice award went to a 1957 356A Speedster in Signal Red, owned by a Melbourne collector who spent four years on a ground-up restoration using parts sourced from Germany, the US, and — surprisingly — a shed in Geelong.

"The hardest part was the brightwork," he said. "Finding correct bumpers for a '57 Speedster is like finding hen's teeth."

Growing the Community

What stood out most wasn't the hardware — it was the people. The 356 Register has seen a notable influx of younger members over the past two years, drawn by the accessibility of early coupes compared to the skyrocketing 911 market.

The club is already planning next year's event, with talk of expanding to include early 912s and 914s. We reckon that's a smart move.
