Toyota Trademarks 'TRD Hammer' — Is a Raptor Rival Finally Coming?
Toyota has filed a trademark for 'TRD Hammer', adding fuel to long-running speculation that a high-performance Tundra designed to take on the Ford F-150 Raptor is in the works.
Desert Runner in the Making?
Toyota's rumoured answer to the Ford F-150 Raptor has taken another step towards reality, with the Japanese manufacturer filing a trademark application for the name 'TRD Hammer' in March 2026.
According to The Drive, who spotted the application lodged with the US Patent and Trademark Office, the filing is currently awaiting assignment to an examining attorney. While Toyota hasn't confirmed what the name might be used for, all signs point to a high-performance Tundra built for serious off-road work.
The trademark comes on the heels of spy photos showing what appears to be a heavily modified Tundra testing with serious hardware — think lift kit, chunky tyres, and aggressive bodywork suggesting proper performance upgrades beneath the surface.
What's in a Name?
More telling is a recent survey Toyota sent to potential customers, asking them to rank a handful of names for what was described as a "high-performance truck package". TRD Hammer made the list alongside TRD Quake, TRD Bizurk, TRD Iron, and TRD Baja.
The only other vehicle to wear the Hammer badge in recent memory was AMG's legendary W124-based Mercedes from the 1980s, so there's not much risk of confusion.
Room at the Top
With the F-150 Raptor proving there's serious money to be made in the high-performance ute segment, Toyota would be smart to jump in. The current TRD Pro Tundra is capable, but there's clear daylight between it and Ford's desert runner.
As Hagerty notes, Toyota routinely files trademarks for names it may never use, protecting them from competitors. But with customer surveys, spy shots, and now a trademark filing all lining up, the TRD Hammer looks increasingly likely to become reality.
Whether it lives up to its name remains to be seen.
