This retrotech 1956 Holden FJ ute is a 21st birthday present 17 years in the making

According to Street Machine, young Zack Williams might just be the luckiest kid in Australia. When he turns 21, his dad Lloyd will hand him the keys to an immaculate 1956 Holden FJ ute — one that's been a labour of love years in the making.

But this isn't a museum piece destined for garage hibernation. Lloyd and his wife Kimberley plan to rack up plenty of kilometres behind the wheel before Zack's big day, treating the FJ as the usable classic it was built to be.

Lloyd's brief was straightforward: maintain the timeless FJ silhouette while transplanting a contemporary drivetrain underneath. The goal? A ute that drives like a modern vehicle but turns heads like only an FJ can.

The build includes all the creature comforts you'd expect from a daily driver — air conditioning, power windows, and remote locking. It's a retrotech approach that respects the original design while making it genuinely liveable for regular use.
