Oil (recommended),Penrite HPR 30 (20W-60)Repco, Total Tools$35-50 (5L)

Notes: The B18 and B20 engines use the same spin-on oil filter. Some early B18 cars had a canister-type filter, check yours. Penrite HPR 30 is the go-to for Australian owners running these on the street; if it’s a weekend car, Penrite Classic Light (25W-70) works well in warmer climates.

Notes: Always use genuine Volvo or quality aftermarket gaskets. Cheap eBay gaskets are false economy on these engines. VP Autoparts in Sweden ships to Australia and is the go-to for comprehensive gasket sets. Skandix (Germany) is a close second.

Cooling System

PartOEM NumberAU AlternativeSuppliersPrice Range
Thermostat (82C)273459Tridon TT234-82Repco, Supercheap Auto$15-25

Notes: The stock 82C thermostat is correct for Australian conditions. Some owners run 71C for added safety margin in hot climates, but 82C helps emissions and engine longevity. Never run without a thermostat, the engine needs back-pressure for even cooling.

Notes: Many Australian 122S owners have converted from the original generator to an alternator. The Bosch 55A conversion is the most popular. If you’re still running the generator, Lucas and Bosch parts are available through specialist auto electricians. Electronic ignition kits (Pertronix Ignitor) are a popular and reversible upgrade, about $120-150.
