Commodore (VB-VL)

1978-1988 / Sedan / Estate / Australia

Common Transmission

TH700-R4 Automatic Failure

Symptoms

Harsh 3-4 shift, slipping under load, shudder on light throttle, delayed engagement from Park to Drive.

Cause

The TH700 (also known as the 4L60) is a good transmission at stock power levels but becomes marginal when power increases, even modestly. The 3-4 clutch pack is the weak point. Contaminated or burnt fluid accelerates wear. Many VL turbo autos have been abused at the traffic lights and on the drag strip.

Fix

Start with a fluid and filter service.

If the fluid is dark or smells burnt, the damage may already be done.

A shift kit ($200-400 fitted) firms up shifts and reduces clutch slippage, extending transmission life.

A full rebuild costs $1,500-2,500.

For modified VL turbos making more than 200 kW at the wheels, consider a TH400 conversion, the TH400 is a 3-speed auto that's virtually indestructible.
