R32 GTR compliance for road registration in Victoria, what do I need?

question

just imported an r32 gtr from japan. its landed and cleared customs but now i need to get it complied and registered in victoria. ive heard the process has changed recently. do i need a RAWS workshop or can any engineer sign it off? whats the typical cost and timeline? the car is bone stock which should make things simpler.

you need a RAWS (Registered Automotive Workshop Scheme) workshop for compliance. they handle the federal compliance and any modifications needed to meet ADRs. a stock R32 GTR is relatively straightforward because they were sold new in australia so the ADR requirements are well understood. budget $3000-5000 for compliance and allow 4-8 weeks. once complied you take it to vicroads with the compliance plate for registration. make sure the workshop gives you the compliance plate and all paperwork.

went through this with my s15 last year. the key is finding a RAWS workshop with GTR experience. some workshops specialise in certain models and the ones who know GT-Rs will do it faster and with less hassle. JDM Garage in dandenong do a lot of skylines. typical turnaround is 6 weeks but it can be longer if parts are needed for ADR compliance.

A stock Japanese-market car that was also sold in Australia is the easiest compliance job. The R32 GT-R was sold here by Nissan Australia so the ADR compliance is well documented. Just make sure the car hasn't been modified with non-ADR-compliant parts in Japan, or those will need to be reverted before compliance. Things like aftermarket exhaust, lighting modifications, or tinted windows can all cause compliance delays.
