Celica (A20/A40)

1970-1981 / Coupe / Liftback / Japan

Common Engine -- 18R Single-Cam

Carburettor Wear

Symptoms

Rough idle, hesitation, poor fuel economy. The single-cam 18R uses a two-barrel Aisan carburettor that is generally reliable but does wear.

Cause

Throttle shaft bushings wear (causing air leaks), float valves stick, jets accumulate varnish, and gaskets perish. Modern ethanol-blended fuels accelerate deterioration of rubber components.

Fix

Rebuild with a carburettor kit ($40--80).

If the throttle shaft bushings are worn, the carburettor body needs rebushing.

Cost: $50--200 for a full rebuild.
