Engine Harness Insulation Breakdown
Symptoms
Intermittent electrical faults, random stalling, sensors throwing codes, and sometimes a faint burning smell from the engine bay. Wires become brittle and crumble when touched. Shorts can blow fuses or worse.
Cause
The original wiring harness insulation on 740/760 models, particularly 1984-1986 cars, was made from a rubber compound that degrades with heat, oil exposure, and ozone. The worst areas are near the alternator, exhaust manifold, and engine block where temperatures are highest. Wires near the engine harness plug connector are especially vulnerable. After 30+ years, the insulation can literally crumble between your fingers.
Fix
Inspect the harness thoroughly.
If isolated sections are affected, you can splice in new wiring and re-insulate with high-quality heat-shrink.
If the whole harness is shot, a complete replacement is the only proper fix.
Used replacement harnesses are getting hard to find, so inspect any you buy before fitting.
Some owners wrap vulnerable sections in braided loom as preventive protection.
Budget a full weekend for inspection and selective repair.
