Common Body and Rust

Nivomat self-levelling rear shocks (wagons)

Symptoms

Rear of the wagon sags under load or sits low permanently. The ride becomes bouncy and wallowy over bumps. Sometimes a clunking noise from the rear suspension.

Cause

Nivomat shocks use an internal hydraulic pump driven by suspension movement to maintain ride height. The seals fail, the internal pump wears out, and the nitrogen charge escapes. Once the Nivomats are dead, the rear sits progressively lower.

Fix

Replace with new Nivomat units ($500+ each, genuine Sachs/Monroe) or convert to conventional shocks and springs.

The conversion is cheaper ($300-400 for quality Bilstein B4 shocks and standard springs) but requires sourcing the correct spring perches.

Many owners prefer the conversion because Nivomats will just fail again in another 80,000-100,000 km.

If you're keeping the car long-term, converting to conventional shocks is the smarter move.
