Heater matrix leak

Symptoms

Coolant smell in the cabin, damp carpet on the passenger side, fogged windscreen. Coolant level drops with no external leak.

Cause

The heater matrix, a small radiator inside the dashboard, corrodes and develops leaks. Old coolant or running plain water accelerates the corrosion.

Fix

Replace the heater matrix.

Unfortunately, this usually requires significant dashboard disassembly.

Budget $500-1,500 AUD including labour.

Run proper coolant mix after replacement.
