// THE STORY

The original MX-5 single-handedly revived the affordable roadster market that had been dormant since the MGB went out of production. Mazda's engineers studied every great British sports car, took what worked, and fixed what didn't. The result was a lightweight, rear-drive, front-engine roadster with pop-up headlights, a slick gearbox, and handling that made every drive feel like an event.

The NA-generation MX-5 is now a modern classic in its own right, with early cars approaching 35 years old. In Australia, the MX-5 has one of the most active and welcoming club communities in the country, with regular track days, touring events, and social meets. The 1.6 is light and pure, while the 1.8 offers more relaxed cruising. Rust is the enemy, particularly around the sills and rear arches. A good NA MX-5 is one of the best driver's cars ever made at any price, and they're still affordable enough to use and enjoy rather than lock away.
