Mazda
Zoom-zoom. Rotary and beyond.
The only manufacturer to win Le Mans with a rotary engine, the 787B, 1991.
Mazda bet everything on the rotary engine, a technology the rest of the industry abandoned, and made it work. The RX-7 FD's sequential twin-turbo 13B made 255 hp from just 1.3 litres, and the 787B remains the only rotary-powered car to win Le Mans (they were promptly banned). In Australia, Mazda's rotary following is almost religious. From the Cosmo Sport to the RX-8, these high-revving, smooth-spinning engines inspire a devotion that no piston engine can match. The sound alone converts people.
