356B drum brakes, improving stopping power without changing the look

question

The factory drum brakes on my 356B are adequate for gentle driving but they lack confidence in any sort of spirited use. I don't want to convert to discs because it changes the look of the car and the correct 356 wheels don't fit over disc brake calipers. Are there ways to improve the drum brake performance while keeping the standard appearance? I'm thinking upgraded lining material and possibly larger wheel cylinders.

The best improvement within the drum brake system is high-quality lining material. Don Pedro Performance in the US make 356-specific brake shoes with modern lining compounds that stop significantly better than the standard material. About $300 for a full set. Larger wheel cylinders give a firmer pedal but don't actually improve stopping distance. Also make sure the brake drums are properly machined and round. Oval drums are the biggest single cause of poor braking on 356s.

Also consider stainless steel braided brake lines to replace the rubber factory lines. The rubber swells under pressure and absorbs pedal effort. Stainless lines give a much firmer pedal feel which translates to better modulation. About $120 for a set and they last indefinitely. Combined with fresh fluid and good linings, you'll have confidence in the brakes without changing the appearance.
