Chev 350 cam choice for a street Monaro, what profiles work?
building a fresh 350 for the monaro and need to choose a cam. the engine will be a mild street build with vortec heads, a dual-plane intake, and a holley 600. want a nice idle and good mid-range torque. dont need max horsepower, just a solid driving engine. the car has a turbo 350 auto and 3.25 diff. whats the go for cam duration and lift on a street chev?
comp cams XE268H is the classic street cam for a 350 with vortec heads. its got enough duration to make good power but not so much that the idle is rough. about 218 degrees at .050 with .477 lift. the vortec heads like lift more than duration so that profile works well. with the turbo 350 and 3.25 diff itll pull clean from 1500rpm to 5500rpm. ive run this exact combo in a mates torana and its sweet.
I'm a Ford man but I'll admit the Chev 350 with Vortec heads is a brilliant street combo. The XE268H that ToranaSteve recommended is the industry standard for a reason. Don't go bigger than 220 degrees at .050 for a street car with an auto. The vacuum signal drops off with longer duration and the TH350 needs vacuum for smooth shifts.
the vortec heads flow so well you dont need a wild cam to make power. the xe268 is perfect for what youre building. any bigger and the car will be a dog in traffic with the auto.
