SU carburettor tuning on the E-Type,patience required

tip

The triple SU HD8 carburettors on the six-cylinder E-Type are beautifully simple once you understand them, but they must be tuned as a set. Each carburettor feeds two cylinders and they need to be balanced using a Unisyn or similar flow meter. Start with the mixture: lift the piston on each carb approximately 3mm. If the engine speeds up, the mixture is rich. If it dies, it's lean. If it rises very slightly then settles, it's correct. Do this iteratively across all three carburettors. The needles must be the correct profile for your engine specification. A set of properly tuned SUs is a thing of beauty.
