Top-loader 4-speed rebuild,who does the best work in NSW?
The top-loader four-speed in my XA GT is getting notchy going into second gear when cold. It improves when warm but it's definitely getting worse. I want it properly rebuilt with new synchros and bearings, not just patched. Who in the Sydney or Hunter region does quality gearbox rebuilds on Ford top-loaders? I'd rather pay more for good work than save money and have it fail on the road.
Gearbox & Diff Services in Smithfield are the go in Sydney. They've rebuilt dozens of top-loaders for the GT community. Budget $1,800-2,200 for a full rebuild with new synchros, bearings, and seals. They also check the cluster gear end float and replace the countershaft if it's worn. Turn-around is usually two to three weeks. Tell them it's a GT and they'll source the correct heavy-duty synchros.
cant help with nsw specifically but the top-loader is the same basic unit as the muncie 4-speed in holdens. any good gearbox rebuilder who does american 4-speeds can do a top-loader. the synchros and bearings are the same sourcing. check with the ford falcon owners club in nsw, they always have a recommended rebuilder.
