Understanding the PV544's B16 Engine and Factory Fuel System Options
The 1962 PV544 came standard with the B16 engine, which produced around 90 horsepower with either a single Zenith carburettor or, on some export models, a twin SU setup. What catches people out is that many restorations have been retrofitted with modern fuel injection or completely different carburettor configurations. If you're chasing originality, the factory specification for your particular chassis number matters. A 1962 Australian-delivered PV544 would have left the factory with specific equipment codes stamped in the chassis documentation. I've seen several cars that looked correct at first glance but had been modernised underneath in ways that diminished their historical integrity. The Zenith carburettor, while sometimes fiddly, is the correct specification for most '62 models and worth preserving if your car originally wore one.
