VS SS first service,what should I ask the mechanic to check?
Just got my first V8 (VS SS, 5.0L) and I want to give it a thorough first service since I don't have any history. I know the basics like oil, coolant, and brakes but what are the VS-specific things I should ask the mechanic to look at? Any common failures or things that should be replaced preventatively at 180,000km?
the 5.0L 304 in the VS is a tough engine. at 180k check the timing chain for stretch (rattly cold start), the oil pump drive gear (low oil pressure when hot), and the harmonic balancer rubber (cracks and throws the timing off). also check the torque converter bolts on the auto because they vibrate loose. the 304 is reliable but those are the known weak points at that mileage.
add the diff bushings to the list. the rear diff mounts on vn-vs commodores are rubber and they deteriorate badly. youll feel a clunk when you get on and off the throttle. new bushings are about $100 and make a massive difference to how the car drives. also check the steering rack boots for splits.
im in the same boat with my VL! the mechanic found heaps of stuff on my first service too. the VS is a bit newer so it should be in better nick but definitely get the cooling system checked. radiators on these cars get tired and the last thing you want is to overheat the 304.
