What routine maintenance should I do first on my 940?

question

I just bought a 1995 940 GL with 195,000km and no service history. The previous owner was an older gentleman who said he serviced it regularly but couldn't find the records. It seems to run fine but I'm worried about what might be lurking. What should I do first? I'm on a tight budget so I need to prioritise. Probably can spend about $500 on maintenance right now.

with no history, assume everything needs doing. priority order: 1. engine oil and filter (penrite hpr30, $80). 2. coolant flush and new thermostat ($60). 3. brake fluid flush ($40 diy). 4. check the timing belt and tensioner, if its the original at 195k youre on borrowed time and thats a $300-400 job. that should eat your $500 but itll keep you safe.

timing belt timing belt timing belt. if that snaps on a b230f its game over for the valves. get that checked first even if you skip everything else. a belt and tensioner is about $120 in parts if you do it yourself.

I'd add: check the brake pads and rotors. At that age and mileage they might be original. And if you're in SA, the Volvo Club can recommend a good independent mechanic who won't charge dealer prices. Don't take a 940 to a dealer, they'll bleed you dry.
