Minor Rust

Floor Pan Corrosion

Symptoms

The floor rusts from underneath, progressing from surface rust to perforation. In severe cases, you can see the road through the floor. The structural rigidity of the unibody is compromised.

Cause

Road spray, trapped moisture, and inadequate factory underseal. Cars that have been driven on unsealed roads or parked on grass accelerate floor rust.

Fix

Surface rust: wire brush, treat, and seal with a quality rust converter and chassis paint.

Perforation: cut out affected areas and weld in new steel.

Major floor pan replacement requires a rotisserie or at minimum a solid four-post hoist.

Cost: $500-2,000 for minor repair, $2,000-5,000+ for major floor replacement.
