R154 Input Shaft Bearing Noise
Symptoms
A whining or howling noise that changes when the clutch pedal is depressed. The noise is present in neutral with the clutch engaged and disappears when the pedal is pressed.
Cause
The input shaft bearing wears over time, particularly on cars that have been driven with heavy clutch setups or high power levels.
Fix
The bearing can be replaced without a full gearbox rebuild, but the gearbox must come out of the car.
Budget $500-1,000 for the bearing replacement including removal and refitting the gearbox.
While it's out, inspect the synchros and replace the gearbox oil with a quality 75W-90 GL-4 fluid.
