Alternator and battery failures
Symptoms
Battery light on, dimming lights, or the car won't start. Alternator whine through the radio speakers.
Cause
Alternators wear out, brushes and bearings fail. Batteries last 4-6 years in these cars before capacity drops. Poor earth connections accelerate problems.
Fix
Test charging voltage at the battery, should be 13.8-14.4V with engine running.
If low, suspect the alternator or voltage regulator.
Rebuild kits are available, or fit a remanufactured Bosch unit.
Replace the battery if it's more than 5 years old.
Clean all earth straps, especially the one from engine to chassis and battery to body.
