Fuel pump failures and electrical gremlins
Symptoms
No fuel pressure, hard starting, or the engine cuts out at speed. Sometimes you'll hear the pump whining loudly before it fails.
Cause
In-tank fuel pumps wear out, especially if run on fumes regularly. Wiring to the pump (which runs through the trunk and under the car) corrodes or breaks.
Fix
Replace the fuel pump, Bosch units are reliable.
Check the fuel pump relay (under the passenger seat or behind the kick panel) and clean the contacts.
Inspect wiring from the tank forward for corrosion or breaks.
Fit a new fuel filter at the same time.
