MGA 1600 engine rebuild, original spec or mild upgrade?

question

The B-series 1600 engine in my MGA needs a rebuild. It's got 95,000 miles on it and the bore wear is beyond limits. I'm torn between rebuilding to original specification or taking the opportunity to fit slightly higher compression pistons and a mild performance cam. The car is a regular at the Tasmanian British Car Club events and I'd like it to be a bit more lively on the hills. Will a mild build affect the car's value or standing at concours events?

A mild performance build with 9.0:1 compression pistons and a fast road cam is well within the bounds of what MGA enthusiasts consider acceptable. It won't affect concours standing if the external appearance is stock. The B-series engine responds beautifully to a modest compression increase and a slightly more aggressive cam profile. Budget about $2,500 for a quality rebuild with performance pistons and cam. The car will be noticeably more enjoyable on Tasmania's wonderful roads without losing any of its character.

the b-series in the mga is the same basic engine as the midget so i can comment from experience. the mild performance build is the way to go. you wont regret the extra power on hills and nobody can tell from the outside. keep the original cam and pistons in a box if you ever want to revert for concours. the key is keeping it looking stock while making it drive better.
