MGA wire wheel maintenance, the splines are everything

tip

The wire wheels on an MGA are one of its most beautiful features and also its most demanding maintenance item. The spline hubs that connect the wheel to the brake drum must be removed, cleaned, inspected, and re-greased at least once a year. Worn splines allow the wheel to wobble and eventually the knock-off spinner can't tighten properly. The spline wear is invisible from outside so you must disassemble to check. Use Castrol LM grease, not ordinary wheel bearing grease. If the splines are worn beyond the service limit, the hub must be replaced. A complete set of new hubs is about $800 but it's the price of safety.
