Midget 1275cc upgrade,the A-series engine loves it

the mk3 midget came with the 1275cc A-series which is a brilliant little engine. first mod is a proper exhaust manifold, the factory one is incredibly restrictive. a LCB manifold from moss motors is about $200 and frees up noticeable midrange power. next is a K&N air filter and recurved distributor. total spend of about $400 and the car feels completely different. dont bother with a bigger carb until youve done these first, the stock HS4 SU is fine to about 75hp.
