The 944 was everything the 924 should have been: a proper Porsche engine, better balance, and genuine sports car performance. The transaxle layout gave it near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution, and the handling was praised by every journalist who drove it. The naturally aspirated car was good, the Turbo was very good, and the later S2 and Turbo S were some of the best-driving Porsches of the era.
In Australia, the 944 remains accessible and represents exceptional value for a car of this quality. The standard 2.5 is the most affordable entry point, while the Turbo S with its 250hp is the one the collectors want. The biggest challenge is finding one that hasn't been neglected, as cheap Porsches tend to attract owners who can't afford proper maintenance. A well-kept 944 Turbo is one of the great driving experiences available for under $50,000.

Common questions.
Buying
A late-model naturally aspirated 944 (1987-1989) with documented timing belt history and a clean service record. The later cars benefited from incremental improvements throughout production, better engine management, improved build quality, and resolved early-model issues.
Driving and Ownership
Yes, many people do. The 944 was designed as a practical sports car, it has a front boot (small), a rear hatch with fold-down seats (surprisingly useful), air conditioning (most cars), and comfortable seats.
Technical
The torque tube is a rigid aluminium tube that connects the front-mounted engine to the rear-mounted transaxle. Inside it runs the driveshaft (propeller shaft), supported by a centre bearing.
Value and Community
Yes, particularly for the Turbo and Turbo S. The base naturally aspirated 944 has been undervalued for years and is now starting to appreciate as enthusiasts recognise its qualities.
