Falcon (EA-AU)

1988-2002 / Sedan / Estate / Australia

Critical Engine

Crank Angle Sensor Failure (EA-ED)

Symptoms

Engine cranks but won't start, or starts and dies. No spark at all cylinders.

Cause

The crank angle sensor (CAS) on EA-ED models is located in the distributor. The sensor's magnetic pickup weakens with age, or the toothed reluctor wheel develops corrosion.

Fix

Replace the crank angle sensor.

On EA-ED, this requires partially disassembling the distributor.

Set timing to top dead centre (TDC) on cylinder #1 before removing the distributor.

When reinstalling, ensure the rotor points to the #1 lead position.

Cost: $60-120.
